GROWING MORE WITH LESS: YOUR MINI GREEN HOUSE PLAN

Gardeners in the south have it pretty good, all things considered. Down there, you can grow a nice fat tomato or a crunchy string bean all year long. Up north, we grow snow. Lots of it. So a green house is almost a necessity for the true gardening aficionado. If you don’t have the room or resources for a full-size green house, a mini green house will carry you through the colder months with fresh plants and produce for the picking. If that’s your dream, here’s how to put a mini green house plan into action.

Mini Green House Plan #1: Got A Window? Get A Green House!
A window-mounted green house is a viable option even for those of us who do not have any yard space at all. You could add a window box to a condo, or even to a rented apartment. If you are building a window box in a rented apartment, you will need to get a mini green house plan that does not involve any structural changes.

Even in a window box, however, you can grow a few decorative plants and vegetables. Herbs and greens do not take up much space, and you can grow them quite happily in your little window-mounted green house.

Mini Green House Plan #2: Your Patio's The Place
If you have a small patio, it can be converted into a sunroom green house. Make or buy a mini green house plan that encloses your patio and insulates it so that you can use it as a green house. Not only will you be able to grow potted plants there all year, but you will also be able to enjoy a small sunroom, too.

Mini Green House Plan #3: Little House On The Prairie
Microstructures are small buildings that you can place in your yard, like a shed or a tiny green house. In some areas, you won’t even need a building permit for a mini green house plan like this. You can grow a lot of plants in a small green house, and you might even be able to use the soil that’s under the structure to grow some of them in.

Your Mini Green House Plan: Thinking It Through
Before you draw up your mini green house plan, check out local building laws. You need to know what you need a permit for and what you do not.

Consider the climate you live in so that you can plan for the proper heating, cooling and insulation needs.

Consider what plants you want to grow in the mini green house you have been dreaming about. It is more than just a dream now. It’s a plan, and a good one.
